Designing a Recipe

This is my mood board of graphic and illustrative recipes. All of these designs draw out the ingredients and use limited text. I prefer the ones that have been made digitally and think they look much more professional and neater than the ones that are hand drawn. These designs use a lot of colour and bright tones to make each object stand out but this can also lead to the objects contrasting and clashing, this is something I will need to be careful with when making my own, they don't seem to follow a strict colour scheme. I think I will be making mine digitally because I think gives it a more professional look.

Ingredients MoodBoard

This is a mood board of things that would be needed in the recipe and the preparation. I found images of ingredients and tools I would need so that I could use them for reference later on when creating my own drawings in illustrator.

Art Style MoodBoard

This is a mood board I created to see what sort of style I could use for my recipe poster, I wanted to use a fairly classic and traditional style and these are some examples I found that matched the style I was planning to use in my own work, I think this style would be fairly easy to translate into my own work and think it would suit and look good on a baking recipe poster.

America MoodBoard

To see what sort of style I could set the poster like I researched where the brownie recipe came from. From researching I found that the recipe was originated from 1950's america and that gave me inspiration to look into diners and the fashion of the 50's. I decided to make my poster something inspired from 1950s and think that will be the art style I use for my own work.

Font MoodBoard

I wanted to use a font that was inspired from 1950's america and searched for different american and retro fonts on dafont. These were some of the most suitable and best fonts that I found on dafont. I think I was able to find a wide range of fonts that would work well and that fit the theme and style I am looking to recreate for my own work.

These are some thumbnail ideas that I have come up for my brownie recipe. I based all the thumbnails on 50's style america, like recreating diner menus and uses colours that match the genre. I based them all on American 50s diner because that's where the recipe origins from.

These are some developed idea I have made for my brownie poster. For the first design I based it on a 1950s american diner menu and think it works well with the theme I'm going with, the second design shows the final outcome of the recipe and has a step by step layout down the side, I think this design doesn't follow the theme I'm going for and think that I will be using the first design because it fits the origin of the recipe and has a good composition.

This is my final recipe, as I was making american style brownies which were created around the 1950's I wanted to make it 1950's style and tried to make it look like a diner menu and chose a retro font on dafont. To make all of the objects I used illustrator and created simple shapes but still wanted them to be recognisable of what they are. For the colour scheme I wanted to keep the 1950's theme and went for pale tones and kept all the font used on the poster the same. On other posters they had sections for what you will need but as on my ingredients they have writing on them I didn't think it was necessary to repeat myself and felt it would just be wasting space. I'm pleased with how this poster has turned out and think I was successful in creating an informational and visually appealing recipe poster which follows the theme of the 1950's american diner which is where the brownie recipe originated from.
