Festival Posters

These are 6 festival posters that have all taken place in Bristol, I wanted to se what sort of festivals are held in Bristol and see if there was a certain theme to them.

These are some posters that I liked the imagery and illustration used on them, I really like how some of them feature objects that fit the theme of the festival, such as the tickets made into a heart or the film reel used in two of the posters.

These are some posters that I found that just used text as the focus and no images. I really like the way that they have placed the font to make it look like objects/people but have found that you have to be very careful when doing so because it can sometimes change the font so much that the text is hard to read and not legible which won't work for a poster based on font.

These are music festival posters that I decided to look at and analyse. I found that the majority of music posters listed the acts that would be featured at the festival so the audience would know who they were paying to see, I think this is a good idea but needs to be done and placed well so it doesn't just look like a poster full of text. Not a lot of music posters used illustration and the ones that did, did it so it was surrounding the text.

These are some fonts that I have been looking at for my poster. I have decided to create a music festival that plays Metal and Rock bands, much like download. I have decided to name it infamous as its short and rememberable and simply means a bad reputation which is something metal artists and people who listen to metal are often thought as having. So far my favourite fonts here are Wallowxenon, Broken Glass and Kill Em All. I think these three fonts are the best ones I have found as they suit the genre of the festival and are both decorative but also legible. They are quite bold texts and think they would stand out from a busy poster. It has been important to look at fonts that both look good and give the poster a decorative feel as there won't be much illustration on the poster, but also make sure it can still be read no matter what colour it is or even what size and placement it has. To find these fonts I had to go on Dafont.com and search things such as Horror, Grunge, Stencil, Bold, ect to find these chosen 12. There were many that could have been picked but think these ones will be the ones that are most suitable and will transfer well onto a poster.

These are some hand rendered fonts that I made as some inspiration for possible fonts used on my final posters. I think the melting type face and the glass shattering typefaces would work best and be more suitable, I want the font to be decorative and appealing but don't want it to be too illustrative that it distracts the audiences attention away from the rest of the poster as the name shouldn't be the main focal point.

These are some thumbnail designs I came up with for the poster ideas. These are just quick sketches that provide a glimpse of what the possible idea will look like and what works well and what doesn't. I find thumbnail designs very useful as it lets me see what I should develop or what needs to be changed before spending a lot of time designing something that simply won't work.

These are 4 brief development images I drew, these are a few selected thumbnail designs that I have developed and enhanced, I made them bigger, added more detail and even introduced some colour. As I'm making two posters I developed 4 of the thumbnails to get an even better idea of what the potential final posters will look like and how they will turn out, this also shows me what works and what doesn't, saving me more time before taking the designs to the computer and seeing that the designs don't work or look good.

Because I wanted to use the bands actual logos I had to make them into PNG files on photoshop and remove the background of the image so just the logo would remain on the poster. To do this I went onto photoshop, opened the image of the logo, use the magic eraser to make the background/deleted areas transparent rather than white and then save them as PNG files, and place them onto the illustrator festival poster file. I had to repeat the process for each of the logos.

I decided to place them fairly centred and in the order of with the bands would play, first column  the friday, second the saturday and the third, sunday. I placed the bigger acts of the festival at the top of the page so they are the first thing the audience notices. I wanted the logos to be white so they would contrast off of the black background and would stand out and be legible from a distance.

I thought the logos looked a bit lost and random on the background as there was a lot of empty space, it made the poster look to empty. Because I felt the poster looked too plain I decided to add a shape in the background that the majority of the logos would fit into. I still wanted to see the background image so lowered the opacity of the shape so it wasn't as obvious and this actually made the shape darker which allowed a higher contrast for the logos to stand out.

After adding the logos of the band, I decided to add the name of the festival as the header of the poster and added other information about the festival as well. I went for the colour scheme of red, black, grey and white as I feel they best suit the theme and genre of the heavy metal and rock music genre, this may be sterotypical but I think it works well and other colour schemes wouldn't have been appropriate for the festival.

For the second poster I wanted to go for a different style but wanted to keep it fairly similar to the first poster, this is why i kept the same font style, and colour scheme. First I made a black background and started adding varied sized circles which followed the same colour scheme.
After placing the circles on I started to add all the band logos and put them in the middle of the biggest circle on the page, making it the main focal feature of the page. I placed the name of the logo on the top of the page and started adding all other information needed and the social media and sponsor logos on the bottom of the page, just like the first poster.

This is the first poster I made for my festival. I decided to use an image as the background instead of having a plain background and adding illustrations. For the names of the acts featured in the festival I decided to use the bands actual logos as they would be more recognisable to the fans and would look a lot better than just using the same font for each band. I included some information such as the dates, the address and the festivals website so people would know when and where the festival would be placed and where people can get more information about the festival that isn't on the poster and where the tickets are sold online. I'm really pleased with how this has turned out and think it looks like a professional music festival poster. I think the use of the bands logos makes the poster look much more interesting and professional as its something that professional festivals do on their posters.

This is my second poster, I wanted to keep it fairly similar to the previous poster so the audience could see that they belonged together but also make them different so they wouldn't look the same. I went for a very different style approach and decided not to add actual images like the background of the original poster. I kept things such as the band logos, the typefaces, social network sites and sponsor logos on the bottom of the page. I think the actual band logos and the sponsors and social network logos give the posters a more professional and realistic look. I'm really pleased with how these posters turned out and think I was successful in creating professional festival posters. To make these I used illustrator and feel this was the best platform to create my work on.

Designing a Recipe

This is my mood board of graphic and illustrative recipes. All of these designs draw out the ingredients and use limited text. I prefer the ones that have been made digitally and think they look much more professional and neater than the ones that are hand drawn. These designs use a lot of colour and bright tones to make each object stand out but this can also lead to the objects contrasting and clashing, this is something I will need to be careful with when making my own, they don't seem to follow a strict colour scheme. I think I will be making mine digitally because I think gives it a more professional look.

Ingredients MoodBoard

This is a mood board of things that would be needed in the recipe and the preparation. I found images of ingredients and tools I would need so that I could use them for reference later on when creating my own drawings in illustrator.

Art Style MoodBoard

This is a mood board I created to see what sort of style I could use for my recipe poster, I wanted to use a fairly classic and traditional style and these are some examples I found that matched the style I was planning to use in my own work, I think this style would be fairly easy to translate into my own work and think it would suit and look good on a baking recipe poster.

America MoodBoard

To see what sort of style I could set the poster like I researched where the brownie recipe came from. From researching I found that the recipe was originated from 1950's america and that gave me inspiration to look into diners and the fashion of the 50's. I decided to make my poster something inspired from 1950s and think that will be the art style I use for my own work.

Font MoodBoard

I wanted to use a font that was inspired from 1950's america and searched for different american and retro fonts on dafont. These were some of the most suitable and best fonts that I found on dafont. I think I was able to find a wide range of fonts that would work well and that fit the theme and style I am looking to recreate for my own work.

These are some thumbnail ideas that I have come up for my brownie recipe. I based all the thumbnails on 50's style america, like recreating diner menus and uses colours that match the genre. I based them all on American 50s diner because that's where the recipe origins from.

These are some developed idea I have made for my brownie poster. For the first design I based it on a 1950s american diner menu and think it works well with the theme I'm going with, the second design shows the final outcome of the recipe and has a step by step layout down the side, I think this design doesn't follow the theme I'm going for and think that I will be using the first design because it fits the origin of the recipe and has a good composition.

This is my final recipe, as I was making american style brownies which were created around the 1950's I wanted to make it 1950's style and tried to make it look like a diner menu and chose a retro font on dafont. To make all of the objects I used illustrator and created simple shapes but still wanted them to be recognisable of what they are. For the colour scheme I wanted to keep the 1950's theme and went for pale tones and kept all the font used on the poster the same. On other posters they had sections for what you will need but as on my ingredients they have writing on them I didn't think it was necessary to repeat myself and felt it would just be wasting space. I'm pleased with how this poster has turned out and think I was successful in creating an informational and visually appealing recipe poster which follows the theme of the 1950's american diner which is where the brownie recipe originated from.

Graphic Concepts

These are some pictures I found of typography quotes. I like how they usually go with the high contrast of white on black to make an impact with the words and make them much more powerful and eyecatching. One thing I really like and what to try when creating my posters is the mix of fonts per image, not all use more than one font but I really like the effect this technique gives and feel that it makes the images much more decorative. The use of different colours and sizes also help give the images a more decorative feel and like how this shows what are the most significant words in the image and makes them much more powerful and creates a bigger impact.

These are some thumbnail designs I came up with using the 5 quotes. I made 5 thumbnails for each quote, making 25 in total. I think this worked well because i was able to see what worked well as a picture and what didn't work at all and gave me some idea of how it would turn out.

10 Designs made on Illustrator:

These are my 10 designs that I made on Illustrator. I really enjoyed making these but found it hard to find fonts that were suitable for the quote and followed the same theme. I mainly worked with black font on white background but experimented with a bit of colour (red) and using black backgrounds with white font. I really like the way the colour looks on the black background and think I will experiment with that more for my final two.

This is one of my two final outcomes. I wanted to represent time in the picture so decided to shape the words into a clock. For the font making the outside of the circle I wanted the words to be a rounded shape and make the boarder of the clock. For the hands I wanted to choose a straight font but also make it bold because I wanted it to emphasis the EVERY BODY. I really liked working on the black backgrounds with the 10 designs so decided to work on it again and I think it makes the words stand out much better and gives it a more powerful impact. I'm really pleased with how this one has turned out and think the high contrast of the white on black, along with the bold font really emphasises the words and the meaning.

This is my second final outcome. For this one I decided to keep the same font and colour style as the one I made in the 10 designs but just changed the layout. Instead of having it reflecting diagonally I just kept it straight. I think the image is a lot more powerful this way as its easier to read and the formal layout makes it much more serious. I really like the way the colour comes out off of the black background and like the high contrast it has, making the words have a much bigger impact. I wanted to use a bold and formal font and felt this was the most appropriate style for the words, I don't think this would have had the same effect if it was made from a more decorative font.

Expressive Words

These are some expressive words I found. They all just use the letters in basic and bold fonts and place them in ways for the word to show the meaning. I really like how you are able to create an illustrative image by just using single words and simply changing size and placement.

These are my thumbnails of expressive words I wanted to create. I made 4 different layouts for each word and somehow create the meaning of the word by just using the letters. I liked creating the thumbnails as it was possible for me to see how the final product would look and give me some idea of what would work well and what wouldn't.

Final 5 words

These are my two favourite designs I made out of the 5 I created on illustrator. I really like the way the smile was able to made into a wide smile outline. I used a standard font but made it bolder so it stood out more. I Like how the negative space between the letters could become the teeth. I really like the way I layered black on grey letters so create the vibration effect. Im really pleased with how these have turned out and think I was successful in being able to create the effect and meaning of the word by the letters themselves.

Type Pattern

Mood Board

These are some images I found of type patterns, its a simple technique of simply choosing one letter and copying it to create patterns and shapes, often making the letter itself unrecognisable. I really like this technique and think I will try experiment with using just one letter and using more than one colour as these examples only use black font on white background. I think I will try create a range of patterns such as the bottom left image and try create some unique and interesting shapes but will also try to create a continuous pattern like the rest of the images.

Own out comes on Illustrator

These are my final type patterns I made using Illustrator. We went on Dafont and downloaded some decorative type faces and copied them on to illustrator to try and make some symmetrical patterns. We also had to play around with different colours to try and make the patterns more appealing and detailed. I really enjoyed making these and think I was successful in making them. My favourite style of patterns I made were the ones where I mixed colours to add depth and detail to the pattern. I thought this was a really fun and interesting technique to try and think I was successful in creating some visually appealing and unique patterns out of single letters.
